~Milk/Tallow Soaps~
Tallow/Lard: Tallow/ Lard make the most wonderful soap imaginable! It is rich and creamy, long lasting, moisturizing, and skin softening! You can feel the difference on your skin the very first time you use it! I’ve been told by other soap makers and researchers, that there is nothing that compares to it.
“Tallow” is the fat that comes from animals. “Lard” is specifically fat from pigs. Using it is the “old fashioned way” of making soap, like the pioneers did who brought so much strength and wisdom to this land. Many today think of it as despicable, but in actuality, it is a wonderful, skin softening thing!
Animals will always be killed for meat, no matter what people think about it. So why not use every part of that animal in a useful, renewable, earth-friendly, responsible way? Merely sending it to the landfill is much more detrimental and disgusting, it seems to me.
Goats Milk: Milk has been used by people for centuries as a skin softening beauty treatment. Cleopatra was known to have bathed in it. Now Scientists know that it is the alpha hydroxy acids in milk, which rejuvenate, & soften the skin.
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye): Soap by definition, is Lye + Fat (oils). There is no other way to make soap, than with lye. It is the catalyst that turns fat and/or oils into soap. So whether it is in the list of ingredients or not, it is there. If it is soap, it contains lye, commercial and homemade. (Because it is part of the definition, it is not legally required on the package.)
We indicate its presence with the term “saponified”, which means, “turned into soap,” (with the use of lye).
Essential Oils/Fragrance: Essential oils come from plants, fragrances do not. We use both in our soaps. Some fragrances either aren’t available in nature, or are prohibitively expensive.
Glycerin: Is produced naturally in soap, but is removed from commercial soaps, to be used in their more expensive beauty products. It remains in all of ours, of course, maintaining all of its soothing and gentle properties within the soap.
Sugar/Lemon Juice: Both help to balance out the soaps ph.
Sweet Almond Oil: Is a great moisturizer for all skin types. It soothes, softens and conditions the skin, and is rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E.
Vitamin E: Has long been known for its ability to heal and protect, and in some instances, rejuvenate the skin.
No Colors have been added to the tallow soaps in the past, so they have always been a natural creamy color. However, now that I am using color in the Vegetable oil soaps, I may use some in these from time to time. It may or may not be an all natural element, as those tend to fade rather easily and don’t hold up in milk/tallow soaps as well.
For Sensitive Skin, I always recommend the unscented, since it is the most natural, and has the least ingredients to contend with.
